One in two Americans lives with at least one chronic condition, but certain populations are disproportionately affected.  The full costs of chronic disease extend well beyond medical expenses, hindering educational and economic opportunity, and perpetuating cycles of both health and socioeconomic disparities.  Policies to assist states and localities to address social determinants of health, such as the proposed, bipartisan Social Determinants Accelerator Act (HR 4004), and health disparities such as the CDC’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health grants are needed to make a difference.

This briefing will address critical questions aimed at motivating change, including:

  • How does chronic disease affect individual and family income and economic opportunity?
  • How does caregiving factor into economic mobility and why are some populations affected more dramatically?
  • What can be gained from policies focused on the interplay of health status and socioeconomic status?
  • What is being and can be done to address health equity? How will that enable economic opportunity?

Hosted by the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, we invite you to join us and our panel of experts as we dive into policy challenges and solutions for the REAL costs of chronic disease, and discuss ripe opportunities for reforms that will make a difference in reducing the burden of chronic disease for ALL Americans.
