A new legislative proposal in CA focuses on lowering the high deductibles many people face when purchasing their prescription drugs. Senate bill 568 introduced by Senator Richard Pan, MD (D-6th) would prohibit health care plans from requiring consumers pay a deductible for a covered prescription drug and various equipment and supplies for the management and treatment of diabetes. The law would apply to plans issued, amended or renewed after January 1, 2022.
Such “first dollar coverage” for covered prescription medicines would provide welcome relief for millions of Californians living with chronic illnesses who otherwise would have to meet a deductible before having coverage for their medicines. The bill would continue to allow health plans to require patients to share the costs of their medicines by requiring co-pays or coinsurance, but would eliminate having to meet a deductible first.
First dollar coverage for prescription medicines is welcome relief for people who depend upon medicines for their health.
